FABIEN MARA

FABIEN MARA

Fabien Mara is a French photographer best known for his backstage images of 1990s fashion shows, becoming in 1998 the first to publish a book dedicated to the subject.

His career began with Condé Nast, where a role as photo production assistant immersed him in the world of shoots and sparked his own desire to capture images. He went on to serve as photo director for an independent magazine before moving to New York, collaborating with masters such as Arthur Elgort, Michel Comte, and Bert Stern. From 1991 to 1998, he chronicled the backstage of fashion at the height of the supermodel era.

Women remain central to his work, which extends beyond fashion to portraits of actresses and visual artists. Today, Mara devotes himself to personal projects, exploring themes from urban to rural landscapes. His photographs have been exhibited internationally—in Paris, Prague, Bogotá, and Taiwan—and are held in major collections, including the Maison Européenne de la Photographie.
