Information about the artist: Arthur Elgort, following in the footsteps of Martin Munkacsi and Richard Avedon, moved fashion photography beyond the studio. Preferring city streets and natural settings like the New York countryside, he embraced movement, humor, natural light, and improvisation, allowing creative accidents to shape his work. As he recalled in The Big Picture, “All I saw were models standing still…so I decided to do something else. I took my models out on the streets of New York, Paris, or wherever I was, and the magazines liked it. It felt different.”

Some of his most memorable images—of Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss, and Karlie Kloss—came not during formal sessions but in candid in-between moments: backstage, while models prepared, or after hours. This photojournalistic instinct for spontaneity gave his work its effortless honesty and enduring impact.

Born in 1940 in New York City, Elgort studied painting at Hunter College before finding photography better suited to his temperament. Just a year after beginning, he debuted in British Vogue in 1971, creating a sensation and cementing his place in fashion photography.
